Morocco’s essential zawiyas

Places of
living memory.

Ten historic centers, each carrying a distinct lineage of scholarship, devotion, hospitality and remembrance.

01

Marrakech

Sabʿatu Rijāl

Marrakech’s Seven Saints pilgrimage was organized in the late seventeenth century during the reign of Moulay Ismail. Its traditional circuit gathers scholars and spiritual teachers whose memory still shapes the Red City.

02

Fez

Al-Qarawiyyin, Moulay Idriss II & Tijaniyya

Al-Qarawiyyin was founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and became one of the Islamic world’s great centers of learning. Nearby, the sanctuaries of Moulay Idriss II and Sidi Ahmed al-Tijani anchor Fez’s continuing spiritual life.

03

Zerhoun

Moulay Idriss I

The hill town grew around the resting place of Moulay Idriss I, founder of Morocco’s Idrissid dynasty in the eighth century. It remains one of the country’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.

04

Ouezzane

Moulay Abdallah Cherif

Ouezzane developed around the seventeenth-century zawiya of Moulay Abdallah Cherif. The Wazzani tradition made the town a northern center of teaching, hospitality and pilgrimage.

05

Jabal Alam

Moulay Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish

High in the Rif, Jabal Alam holds the sanctuary of the thirteenth-century master Moulay Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish. His teachings profoundly influenced the Shadhili spiritual lineage through his disciple Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili.

06

Madagh · Berkane

Qadiri Boutchichiya

07

Meknes

Aissawa Zawiya

The Aissawa tradition was founded in Meknes by Sidi Mohammed Ben Aissa around the turn of the sixteenth century. His mother zawiya remains closely connected to the city’s devotional gatherings and sacred musical heritage.

08

Sidi Ali · Meknes

Hamadsha Zawiya

The village of Sidi Ali is associated with Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch and the Hamadsha brotherhood, which emerged in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its pilgrimage tradition links devotion, healing practices and distinctive ceremonial music.

09

Tamgrout · Drâa

Nasiriyya Zawiya

The Nasiriyya zawiya flourished in the seventeenth century under Sidi Mohammed ibn Nasir. Tamgrout became renowned for scholarship, trans-Saharan learning and a manuscript library preserved in the Drâa Valley.

10

Boujad

Sharqawiya Zawiya

Boujad grew around the Sharqawiya zawiya established by Sidi Mohammed al-Sharqi in the early modern period. The town became known for religious learning, generous hospitality and ties across central Morocco.

A note on access

Invitation, never entitlement.

Some mosques, zawiyas and inner sanctuaries limit entry to Muslims or close during prayers and private gatherings. We never promise access that is not ours to grant. Each visit is reconfirmed locally, dress and photography guidance is shared in advance, and a meaningful exterior or scholarly alternative is always prepared.
