Drâa-Tafilalet

Tamegroute and the Drâa valley

تامكروت ووادي درعة

South of the High Atlas, the Drâa river runs through a long ribbon of palm groves and earthen villages. Near its end, 20 km beyond Zagora, Tamegroute keeps the zawiya of the Nasiriyya, a Shadhili branch made famous by Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Darʿi (d. 1674), with its celebrated library of manuscripts and its green-glazed pottery. The Nasiri Oasis Retreat comes here from Marrakech.

Getting there. From Marrakech airport (RAK): Ouarzazate is 194 km over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, about 4 hours; Zagora a further 156 km, about 3 hours; Tamegroute 20 km beyond.
