Sufi Retreat Morocco: Packing List and What to Expect
A five-day Shadhili Sufi retreat in Marrakech is a journey through the living places of Moroccan Sufism, built around the ziyara of the city’s saints, the five daily prayers, dhikr, and periods of silence. If you are coming from the UK, Europe, the USA, Indonesia or the Middle East, knowing what to pack and what the rhythm of each day looks like will help you arrive ready to focus on the path, not on logistics.
This guide covers clothing, etiquette, the daily schedule, and what Nūr Morocco provides on all three five-day retreats: Shadhili Heritage, Shadhili Signature, and Shadhili Luxury.
Who these retreats are for
The retreats welcome Muslim travellers on the devotional track and seekers of any faith or none on the open track. Both tracks follow the same route and visit the same places; you choose how you take part when you book. The devotional track includes the five prayers in congregation, full participation in zawiya dhikr, and sanctuary visits open to Muslim visitors. The open track keeps prayer times as moments of quiet, attends dhikr as a quiet guest where the zawiya welcomes visitors, and includes guided exterior visits where an interior is reserved.
A retreat with us is not a formal khalwa — the solitary retreat a disciple makes under the direction of a sheikh — and we do not promise a meeting with any particular teacher. A qualified spiritual facilitator leads the sessions agreed in your programme, and gatherings with a zawiya are confirmed individually for each date.
What a typical day looks like
Each day is set around the prayer times. Mornings begin with ziyara — visiting the tombs and zawiyas of the saints with a licensed local guide. Afternoons are for rest, reading and quiet. Evenings are for remembrance: dhikr, śalawāt and, where arranged, private evenings of Moroccan madīṩ.
There is no special dress required by the Shadhili path itself, but Morocco is a conservative country and the places you will visit are sacred spaces. Modest, respectful clothing is the expectation everywhere.
What to pack
Pack light. You will move between the airport, your accommodation, the zawiyas and the saints’ tombs, and you will be on your feet for much of each day.

What Nūr Morocco provides
All three retreats are all-inclusive from Marrakech airport (RAK) and back. Every departure includes:
- Airport pickup on arrival and your transfer back on departure
- Accommodation, three meals a day, drinking water and all ground transport in the programme
- A local guide and a qualified spiritual facilitator for the sessions agreed in your programme
- Time and space each day for prayer, Qur’an recitation, dhikr, śalawāt, journaling and rest
- Devotional evenings with Moroccan madīṩ, where arranged
The Heritage, Signature and Luxury retreats differ in comfort level, group size, transport and private hospitality, but the core spiritual programme is the same. Prices are calculated from the accommodation level, group size, transport and confirmed programme, and are sent with your proposal — they are not listed here.
Etiquette on the ground
Moroccan sacred spaces run on adab — respect and right conduct. A few points will serve you well:
- Come with a clear intention: to remember death, to pray for the dead, and to draw closer to God.
- Dress modestly; women cover their hair inside shrines and zawiyas.
- Remove your shoes where indicated, and keep them with you in the small bag you bring.
- Greet the people of the graves with as-salāmu ‘alaykum, people of this abode.
- Recite al-Fatiṣa and other passages of the Qur’an, and pray for the one you are visiting.
- Keep your voice low in shrines and zawiyas, and ask before taking photographs.
- Give charity where it is customary, in small amounts.

How Nūr Morocco helps
Nūr Morocco runs three five-day Marrakech retreats on the Shadhili path: Shadhili Heritage, Shadhili Signature and Shadhili Luxury. Each is built around the ziyara of Marrakech’s saints, daily prayer-aware rhythm, dhikr and śalawāt, and quiet time for reading and reflection. You can join one place on a scheduled Wednesday–Sunday departure, or reserve a complete 10-place departure for your circle.
The Shadhili Heritage retreat is a grounded introduction to Marrakech’s saints and the Shadhili-Jazuli inheritance. The Signature retreat adds enhanced comfort, dedicated guest care and a dedicated bilingual guide. The Luxury retreat offers private hospitality in a Marrakech residence with garden and pool, plus private spiritual and heritage interpretation.
All retreats are all-inclusive from the airport and back, and each can be joined to another for a longer journey. Visits inside sacred spaces and meetings with resident teachers are confirmed individually for each date.
When you are ready, tell us which programme interests you, your preferred dates and your approximate group size. The organizer will confirm availability, inclusions and applicable terms before a booking is accepted.
